Music. What does it mean? What does it say? Why is it written and where do the ideas come from? PART 1 of 3

I'd like to take you through the process of writing the EP "Chasing Stardust", including the writers, where they were written and the meaning behind them.  Each week I will post two songs and the stories behind them.

Track 1 "Indiana Boy" was written at Curb Publishing house in 2011.  I was writing with two writers I frequently write with, Vicki Mcgehee and Brian Davis (co-writers of  "I Run") and Vicki said "let's write a song that is all about you."  We started talking about the things that molds a someone growing up in the Mid-West, especially Indiana, being that is where I'm from.  As we wrote down where I grew up, hobbies I had and people I knew, Brian and I started working up a melody on the guitar.  No sooner than we had the melody down, Vicki had written the first verse.  Brian and I sat the guitars down and within an hour we had written "Indiana Boy."  I almost didn't put it on this EP and at the last minute changed my mind, and glad I did.  It is a tribute to where I grew up, friends I had and still have, and what it means to be raised in Middle America.

Track 2 "Chasing Stardust" was written by Gerald O'Brien, Catt Gravitt, and myself at Geralds Studio in Nashville, TN.  Stardust is another term for drugs, and not being sober that long I felt like I was chasing stardust.  Sometimes it is hard to put "Nashville" aside and say 'let's write something that has no boundaries, that has no filters and doesn't conform to what is "right" in music today'.  Using the times I could remember, we started hashing out the things a junkie goes through.  Everything from running from cheap hotels, to not being able to sleep, to it being the only thing you think about.  We wanted it to have a neurotic edge that makes you feel like you are walking through each step with the singer.  The song has went from something I never thought I'd play ,to helping me win CMT's Next Superstar because of a video directed by TK Mckamy.  That's a good feeling
